Implement and Engage Your People with Environmental and Social Governance
ESG vs. CSR – and why it matters for your people and business:
Today all large organizations embrace ESG in favor of CSR because “CSR alone is no longer sufficient in a new era of purpose to led business” (Paul Polman, Unilever).
The term CSR covered all activities and efforts to have a positive impact on employees, consumers, the environment, and society. Companies reported often based on own standards as universally agreed concepts and measures were missing.
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) introduces precise assessments and metrics of how businesses:
Respond to climate change
Build trust and foster innovation
Manage (sustainable) supply chains
Today ESG represents a set of standards for a company’s operations that socially conscious investors use to screen potential investments. Environmental criteria consider how a company performs in areas such as energy use, waste, pollution, natural resource conservation, and treatment of animals.
Social criteria examine how it manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and the communities where it operates. Governance deals with a company’s leadership, executive pay, audits, internal controls, and shareholder rights.
Some investors have come to believe that environmental, social, and governance criteria have a practical purpose beyond any ethical concerns. Today rating agencies to evaluate corporate purpose, strategy and management quality of companies using ESG frameworks such as proposed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) or Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and others to evaluate business on their performance towards sustainability.
Training your people and achieving better results in ESG is the key to attract investors or fulfill the requirements of large-scale international investment companies and VC’s.
